Southport was first settled in 1869 and became a seaside resort in the 1890s. Today many old style homes remain and Southport in parts, does tend to have a very hotch-potch look about it. These areas are slowly being redeveloped as many parts of Southport are zoned for multi-storey housing complexes.

Southport is currently known as the Gold Coast's CBD. You will find Gold Coast Hospital and Australia Fair and on the outskirts, Griffith University.
